The Call of Duty 4 has interesting story to support gameplay. The story begins in 2011, when an ultra-nationalist group in Russia declares war on the Russian government in the bid to restore the nation to its previous glorious status like the days of Soviet Union. Meanwhile, an anti-western separatist group led by Al-Assad performs a coup-d’état in a fictional Middle Eastern nation and executes its president on national television. A division of USMC 1st Force Recon is dispatched to capture Al-Assad, but fails and is engaged in a heavy fire fight in the capital of the concerned nation.
Meanwhile, a S.A.S. team led by Captain John Price is deployed to intercept a ship containing possible nuclear material. Though the weapon is not found, indications are clear that Al-Assad may have a nuclear warhead at their disposal. As the battle in Middle East reaches its third day, complications arise when the nuclear warhead is detonated & 30000 U.S. troops are annihilated.
Believing that Al-Assad is still alive, the S.A.S team tracks him down to a safe house in Azerbaijan where he is questioned before being executed. The name of Imran Zakhaev, a former enemy of Captain Price and the leader of ultra-nationalist movement in Russia comes to fore and the team sets out to capture him. To find his whereabouts, the S.A.S. team pursue his son for Intel, but he commits suicide rather than to divulge any information.
Infuriated, Zakhaev manages to capture a Russian nuclear launch site & launches multiple ICBMs directed at the U.S. eastern seaboard and capable of inflicting 41 million casualties. In a joint venture, the Marines and S.A.S. operatives manage to re-capture the launch site and deactivate the ICBMs mid-air, before escaping with Zakhaev and his forces hot on their heels.
The joint task force is intercepted on a bridge by a Mi-24 gunship and most of the members are killed apart from Captain Price & Sergeant Mactavish (player). Just before they are about to be executed, Captain Price manages to give his side arm to the player who then quickly eliminates Zakhaev & his associates.
The entire nuclear incident is hushed up as is the involvement of ultra-nationalists in Al-Assad’s regime.
Events of this game are carried onward to Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and Call of Duty – Modern Warfare 3(2011).
